Papers of Professor Henry Campbell Davis and family, consisting chiefly of correspondence, 1869-1960, and topical files by HCD and his father, Robert Means Davis. Topical files re USC libraries, athletics, procedures, etc.; folklore; Wade Hampton and election of 1876; segregation; linguistics; Mt. Zion Institute; teaching of English language; Lexington County and Fairfield County, S.C., and Saluda, N.C., and elsewhere; literacy study, 1914; and essay, 1932, re African colonization, 1828-1830, presented to the Kosmos Club. Persons represented include Edgar Allen Poe, Braidwood Lester Holmes, C.E. Holt, Cadwalader Jones, Joseph LeConte, Oscar Lieber, Judge Thomas Jefferson Mackey, Smith family, Dr. James Davis, Robert Means Davis, Jr., and other members of the family. Volumes include scrapbook, 1850-1865, containing clippings of poetry and several news items published in Charleston newspapers and periodicals with notes by HCD; 7 bound volumes of miscellaneous programs, 1869-1947, including those of USC, the Columbia Music Festival, and various Columbia, S.C., churches, including First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, and others; collection also contains 2 articles, "Influence of South Carolina College Men on Antebellum Education," 1909, and "Provincialism and Modern Tendencies in South Carolina Dialect," 1944. Bound volume, 1898-1899, recounting Davis' experiences as a teacher in the Bear Creek Community of Fairfield County, S.C.; 6 volumes re South Carolina Female Collegiate Institute at Barhamville: bound volume, 1900-1948, correspondence and 5 bound volumes, c. 1900-1950, research notes; and 1 bound volume, c. 1935, re Emma Willard's School in Troy, N.Y.
